Years Description
Upgraded IMM Certified Coating Fingerprint Trainer

This is a certification scheme for those who would like to be involved in the training of Coating Fingerprint Quality Controllers for related IMM training/certification programs. Topics include presentation skills, communication skills, and understanding of the subject to be presented. The candidates will be trained on handling quality assurance and quality control aspects of the coating fingerprint tasks since the Coating Fingerprint Quality Controllers are engaged by paint manufacturers, 3rd-party laboratory, (sub-)contractors, auditors and owner for assurance of batch-to-batch paint consistency.

Program report (will be published soon)

Launching of IMM Certified Coating Fingerprint Quality Controller Level 2

This certification scheme places special emphasis on generation of a good Reference spectrum for in-house paint manufacturers and 3rd-party laboratories, which is very crucial for subsequent estimation of degree of similarity for batch-to-batch paint consistency. Besides, on-site inspection using mobile or handheld equipment, review of Coating Fingerprint Certificate and cross-checking of raw FTIR spectrum will be highlighted.

Why fingerprint coatings?

2015-2019 Cost Reduction Alliance Initiative 2.0 (CORAL 2.0) under Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM).

This was prompted by the slowdown in global oil demand as well as the downtrend in oil prices which changed the oil and gas business environment globally.

CORAL 2.0 supported sustainability of the oil and gas industry in the country and prepare for future industry challenges by optimising cost, increasing efficiency and driving industry innovation across all operators.

After 2019, the initiatives under CORAL will transition to the new normal practice across the industry domestically.

Registration of Coatings Fingerprinting under CORAL 2.0
why? Sub-standard material supply contributes to 12 % of direct cause of Loss of Primary Containment (LOPC) in 2015 because coating failures < 3 years after application (6).

23rd January 2015 IMM Task Force on Fingerprinting Polymer Coatings (Phase 2: 2014-2016) formed.

Fingerprinting of intermediate materials of epoxy coatings, i.e. epoxy resin (or base) and hardener (or curing agent) using FTIR spectrometer is possible and reliable.

The FTIR spectroscopy testing shall be performed on these intermediate materials immediately after production in the paint factory, in addition to the standard quality control tests conducted on the produced intermediate materials.

Presentation of the draft of the Coating Fingerprint Certificate by Chairperson of the Task Force, Ms. Nurul Asni Mohamed from PETRONAS GTS was attempted.

22nd March 2013 Forum on “Towards Fingerprinting of Polymeric Coatings” I

Question asked: Can we fingerprint polymeric coatings?
Highlighted the prime concerns of the local paint manufacturers, e.g. the protection of product formula, lack of expertise on spectroscopic analyses and interpretation of results.

The users of the oil and gas companies suffer from high cost of repainting the steel structures and pipelines when the coatings fail.
